12th Century Home With 21st Century Comfort
Sundial House is a beautifully restored house in Villemagne L'Argentière, Languedoc, big enough for seven. It dates back to the 12th century and boasts original features, but it also has all the modern conveniences. It provides superb value for money in an unforgettable holiday location.
The house is divided into two residential units, each with its own entrance. The larger unit has four bedrooms, the smaller is a large one-bedroom flat. We've listed rental rates for the larger unit as a guide to buyers who might want to live in the one-bedroom flat and use the 4-bedroom flat as a source of income during the tourist season, which runs from April through October.
It is possible to add a swimming pool on the property's grounds.
It is set in a delightful location: a medieval village with wonderful restaurants and stunning scenery less than an hour from the Mediterranean beaches. The house takes its name ('Le Cadran Solaire') from the huge sundial that once adorned the façade. Part of this feature still remains, as the local historical centre works on full restoration.
The house is a real piece of history. Along with two important churches in the medieval village of Villemagne L'Argentière (population 430), the house forms part of a property that was built over 800 years ago for visiting dignitaries. Now beautifully restored, it offers spacious and comfortable accommodation which truly captures the tastes and styles of traditional Languedoc interior design.
Inside, you will find many original features and period furniture . . . but not at the expense of modern conveniences. The main living unit in the house has a huge, comfortable sitting room; a chandeliered dining room; four bedrooms; two bathrooms; and a cloakroom.
There are all amenities right on the doorstep, including a twice daily bread van, a general store, a café and two fantastic restaurants. The beautiful surrounding countryside is rich with vineyards, cherry orchards, river valleys and swimming lakes.
Mediterranean beaches lie just 50 minutes to the south for an easy trip to the stretches of sand and sea, a favorite of kids of all ages. Don't miss the Canal du Midi, with its endless shady towpaths ideal for walking or cycling.
Nearby, you can find supermarkets and small shops, café bars, wine tasting opportunities and access to superb local produce. In every season there are cultural events, festivals and concerts as well as nearby golf, water sports, canoeing, and hiking in the fantastic Languedoc National Park that surrounds the property. On the tourist trail, there's the fortified city of Carcassonne, the Pont du Gard, Avignon, the amphitheatre, an earful of Van Gogh stories set in Arles, the Camargue, and the Spanish border that runs through the stunning Pyrenees, all within 2 hours.
Budget airlines fly to Montpellier (45 minutes) Carcassonne, Nimes, Perpignan (90 minutes) and Toulouse (2-1/2 hours).
